WISDOM TOOTH EXTRACTION
What is a wisdom tooth? Why and do you need to remove them ?
Wisdom teeth are third molars which erupt in our oral cavity at the age of approx 18-24 yrs.
These erupt after the jaw growth is almost complete and hence most of the times it does not have enough space to erupt in line to other teeth. Hence it erupts incompletly in off-centre directions. Thus the teeth are difficult to clean and may become infected most often
Once they are infected and if they are not in line with adjacent and opposing teeth, they do not helping in chewing..Thus saving them is a futile effort.. Hence removing them is suggested most of the times.
You might need wisdom teeth removed if you:
- Have one or more impacted wisdom teeth (“Impacted” means partially or fully trapped in your gums or jawbone.)
- Have wisdom teeth that grew in crooked or sideways.
- Develop pain near the back of your mouth.
- Trap food and debris around your wisdom teeth.
- Develop gum disease, particularly around your molars.
- Have tooth decay (cavities) in a partially erupted wisdom tooth.
- Develop a cyst (fluid-filled sac) around one or more wisdom teeth.
- Causing damage to nearby teeth or surrounding bone.
How should I prepare for wisdom teeth removal?
During a consultation with an oral surgeon, they’ll check the health of your wisdom teeth and take dental x-rays (OPG or CBCT) to determine their exact location. This is a good time to tell your surgeon about any medications, vitamins or supplements you’re currently taking.
The surgical procedure is performed under local anesthesia and requires 30 min to an hour usually. Postoperative pain, swelling & discomfort may be there for 4-5 days. Proper medications and following of surgeons instructions helps you to have minimum postoperative pain & discomfort.
